Claire Lynch
Love Light
(Rounder)
These days “subtle” is often code for “dull,” but it wasn’t always, and Lynch remembers those times. Her singing still cuts Dolly with Emmylou, her music still cuts bluegrass with country and vice versa when it’s not cutting western swing with jazz. And her originals, for the most part, still rival in quality the ones she went out and chose. Pleasant, even pretty, from a distance, the songs turn out upon close listening to be more complex than subtle, especially “He Don’t Like to Talk About It,” an unsparingly unsentimental dissection of love on the rocks. Rating: Four-and-a-half International-Bluegrass-Music-Association-Female-Vocalist-of-the-Year awards out of five.
