'NSync: No Strings Attached (2000)

(As published in the Times of Acadiana ... )

’N Sync
No Strings Attached
(Jive)

The style: The latest upgrade of the high-tech bubblegum that these boys share with the Backstreet ones. The best cuts: “This I Promise You” (because it was written by Richard Marx) and “I Thought She Knew” (because it’s a cappella). The weltanschauung: Thank heaven for teenage girls, who having been deprived of their innocence (cf. “Digital Get Down”) nevertheless retain their gullibility (cf. the others, and cf. the name of the record label). And, the liner-notes thanking Jesus notwithstanding, the cybersex-celebrating “Digital Get Down” (co-written by band member JC Chasez) suggests that ’N Sync may be familiar with more than one kind of lip service. Rating: Two masters of puppets out of five.
