To Bags ... with Love: Memorial Album
(Pablo)
Less a tribute to the late vibraphonist Milt Jackson than an excuse to raid albums by Miles Davis, Cannonball Adderley, Benny Carter, the Modern Jazz Quartet, and others for prime Jackson performances, this hodge-podge holds together less as a Jackson showcase than as a random sampling of good-to-really-good jazz circa 1954 through 1983 (with “Blues for Edith,” from the 1976 Milt Jackson and Strings album Feelings, verging on great). That it is, of course, a Jackson showcase too raises it above most other random jazz samplers you might already own. Rating: Four brand-new bags out of five.
