Tjalkuri
Tjalkuri
(Gadfly)
The “dumb country” that Tjalkuri sings about in “Dumb Country” is his native Australia, but given the current state of our own imperfect Union, it resonates on these shores as well. Stylistically, Tjalkuri’s a throwback. That conscience on his sleeve, for instance, thrives on the sincere hope that a terse, rocking beat and a chiming electric guitar will be all he needs to stop the flow of “poison petrol.” Does he sound like Midnight Oil? A little when he sings. Does he sing about dingoes? Only once, on “Dingo Run,” a song about what makes him happy, and the best track on an album full of good ones. Rating: Four men at work out of five.
