Western Electric (2000)

More so even than the John Beland-led edition of the Flying Burrito Brothers, these keepers of the country-rock flame understand that what made the music of McGuinn and-or Parsons special was more than just the ringing twelve-string Rickenbackers, the keening harmonies, and the drugs: The words had to be right too--you thought McGuinn covered Dylan out of brotherly love? Western Electric’s words suffer from journeyman’s disease more than I‘d prefer (covering Gene Clark doesn’t help), but most of the time they’re just good enough to provide the ringing Rickenbackers, the keening harmonies, and the most psychedelic slide guitars since Nashville Skyline with more than enough reason to be. Rating: Three-and-a-half kilowatts out of five.
