Loudon Wainwright III
So Damn Happy
(Sanctuary)
The quibbles: without “I Wish I Was a Lesbian” this live-in-California set falls short of functioning as an ideal summary of Wainwright’s last decade. And including “Westchester County” for the second live album in a row is as redundant as the semi-big-name cameos (Van Dyke Parks, Richard Thompson) are beside the point. The album has a life of its own, though, like almost every other Wainwright album of the last thirty years: only hurting when it laughs, only laughing when it hurts, laughing till it cries, and facing up to more truth than humankind can bear. Rating: Three-and-a-half career moves out of five.
